Being a south Indian, I have not found a better side dish for rice than fish curry. Now what fish you choose is important for a tasty curry, My suggestion choose a fish which has a single bone in the middle. Also get a tamarind best suited for fish curry, best is kerala kudumbu puli.

This curry also goes well with rotis or even toasted bread.

Ingredients
  • 500 gms fish of your choice
  • 10 shallots (small onions) - for masala paste
  • 10 small onions for the curry
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut
  • 6 garlic pods
  • 2 tablespoons kashmiri chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons coriander powder
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powde
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds (uluva)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 pieces Garcinia Cambodia (kudampuli or Malabar tamarind) - soak it in 1 cup warm water
  • 2 slit green chilies
  • 1 handful of curry leaves
  • cooking oil
  • salt to taste
Instructions
  1. Add Some oil to a medium size pan.
  2. Fry the small onions, 2 garlic pods, tomato and let it cook for a few minutes
  3. Add the fennel seeds, coriander powder, chilli powder and desiccated coconut and fry for an additional minute.
  4. Grind the entire mixture to a fine paste(add some water if necessary).
  5. Add some oil to a pan and fry the mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds, wait till the mustard seeds pop.
  6. Now add the curry leaves, green chillies, small onion and garlic and cook for a minute.
  7. Add the turmeric powder and cook for one minute.
  8. Add the grinded paste , tamarind water and salt and let the curry boil.
  9. When it starts boiling add the fish of your choice and cook till the fish is well cooked, enjoy with a side of white rice.
