The title is leftover idli upma because leftover idli the next day will become stale and can be easily powdered, if you are cooking with fresh idlis, freeze them for an hour and then use them.

This is one of those dishes which is very easy to cook and will easily become one of your favorite breakfasts, its healthier than most breakfasts and also so tasty.




There are many methods of preparing a idli upma, for example some prepare it by adding idli podi instead of chili and curry leaves. This recipe is one of my favorites and I hope you try it once. Serve it with idli podi, you will find a recipe for podi here

Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3 idlis
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1/8 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/8 tsp urad dal
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 green chili
  • Few curry leaves
Instructions
  1. To a pan in medium hear, add the oil and fry the mustard seeds and urad dal till the urad dal turns light brown.
  2. Now add the curry leaves & green chili and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onion and give it a mix, add the salt which will help you to cook the onions faster.
  4. Cook till the onions turn brown.
  5. Now take the idlis and smash them to powder using your hands and add all 3 of them.
  6. Give everything a good mixing and cook until smoke comes out of the upma, your upma is ready.
